Church of Monte Berico

This majestic chuch overlooks the town.  The original church (Gothic oratory which is still standing) was build in 1428, the newer one was built in 1687 and completed in 1703.  The sanctuary is both physically and spiritually linked to the city by a long arcade.  There is an annual pilgrimage on September 8th (a Vicentino holiday) to honor a vow made in 1917 by the Vicentinos to avert an invasion by the Austrians.  According to popular belief the first church dedicated to the Madonna of Monte Berico was built on the site where the Virgin Mary appeared to Vincenza Paini in 1426 and 1428 while the inhabitants of the town were dying of the plague.  The Madonna promised that if the people of Vicenza built a church on the top of the hill she would rid them of the plague.  The Vicentinos kept their promise and the church was built in 3 months.
