Andrea Palladio was perhaps the most important architect of his time, and had a very strong influence on renaissance architecture in Italy. His designs have been copied all over the world and often serve as models for important villas and palaces in both Europe and America. The capital building in Washington and Jefferson's estate at Monticello were both modeled after La Rotunda in Vicenza Italy. Andrea Palladio's first major work in Vicenza was La Basilica in Piazza dei Signori. The facade unites 3 Roman building together with a series of arches, all seemingly symmetrical but carefully studied and positioned to reinforce each building. Palladio's last project was the Teatro Olimpico, another work of art that is best appreciated from the inside. Vicenza is the center of renaissance architecture in Italy, with many Palladian villas and palaces quite near the B&B. |
