Piazza dei Signori

Once the site of a Roman forum and market place the piazza traditionally represents a public place and the focal point in Italian society where people come together to do business or simply relax.  The column with the flying lion represents the Venetian republic and was built in 1464 when Vicenza was under Venetian rule.  The column of Christ the redeemer to the right was built in 1640 as Vicenza was establishing its independence.  Just beyond the columns is the part of the square which in medieval times was used as a cereal market.  On the other side of the Basilica and down the steps is Piazza dell'erba where herbs and flowers are sold.  Piazza dei Signori holds various events and entertainment, and on Tuesday and Thursday mornings hosts a market where you can find most anything you need.  It also makes for a great place to sit and sip a glass of wine.
