Lido beach in Venice Italy

Lido is a sandbank in the lagoon of Venice Italy which became a fashion-able beach resort for holiday goers in the 19th century. Half its Adriatic side is private beaches, the main attraction being the famous beach of Thomas Mann's "Death in Venice."

For many years the Doges made their way to Lido's shallow waters to celebrate the Ceremony of Venice's marriage to the sea. They did this by dropping a ring into the waters. The ceremony still takes place today, but by parading decorated boats.

In September the Venice film festival is held in Lido, drawing hoards of tourists from all over the world. Rental prices skyrocket and the island is transformed from a quiet little holiday getaway to a buzzing cultural center for the arts. Lido beach and Venice make for a good day trip from Vicenza.
