Ponte San Michele

Perhaps one of the most beautiful bridges in northern Italy, it is a meeting point for many young people in the evenings and will guide us to the piazza.  Ponte San Michele was built at the meeting point of the two rivers crossing Vicenza, the Bacchiglione and the Retrone, according to a design by Tomaso and Francesco Contini who also worked on the Rialto bridge in Venice.  Built between 1621 and 1623 it is constructed with a single arch.  Just beyond the bridge is an area called "Le Barche" (The Boats) which once served as the port of Vicenza when sea-faring vessels sailed back and forth to Venice with herbs and spices for trade.  Not far from the bridge are the remains of the Teatro Berga - the Roman theater of 200 A.D. which once resembled the Arena in Verona.  Young lovers often meet on this most romantic bridge to confess their love.
