First courses like spaghetti bolognese (spaghetti with a ragu sauce) and lasagna (known as 'pasticcio' in Vicenza) are what most people think of when they think of typical Italian food dishes. It's not so easy to define what typical Italian food really is however, because there are so many foods to choose from. The spaghetteria near our Bed and Breakfast has over a hundred primi piatti! What most people consider typical Italian food however is usually a first course (primo). There is a wide variety of first courses available in Vicenza, from the hundreds of pastas like spaghetti alla carbonara (bacon and eggs!) to the many risotto dishes like risotto con funghi (with mushrooms) or classic soups like minestrone (a real 'warmer-upper' in the winter). Whether it's pasta, risotto, soup or gnocchi, when Italians sit down to lunch you can be sure they'll have some sort of primo piatto. |
